The modern day Republicans are the Party of Lincoln. The modern day Democrats were born with Andrew Jackson. While the party and its organization remain the same, the principals, value, and political beliefs have changed. We do know these these TWO parties dominate the American Politics.
Historical Analysis: The Civil War was not just the North vs. The South. This geographic battle was also a division of politics. The Election of 1860 was a Referendum on Slavery. The South was the Democratic Party. The North became the Republican Party and the others dies out. The Confederacy was the Democrats. The North emerged as the Radical Republicans. The political war was fierce and shaped the next era's of the country. While the South lost the war, their political unity prevailed as the Solid South continued to vote in a block to preserve its heritage.
