About the KESI Calculator Application - Standard View

Welcome to the Kurzweil Calculator Application - Standard View

This is a standard calculator.  It performs basic arithmetic operations and memory functions. The main window consists of a number of dialog controls, and a few fairly simple menus. In the top area there is a display for the current value.  The rest controls are buttons for numbers and standard functions.  You may get yourself familiar with each control by tabbing to its location and then pressing F1 for help.  Each control has a hot key associated with it. You can press F3 anytime to get a complete list of the hot keys.

To use a calculator button, you can either tab to the button’s location and then press enter, or simply press its hot key.  The calculator buttons include numbers, binary operators, unary operators, memory functions, and other functions.

To perform a unary operation, enter the number to be acted on followed by the operator.  Unary operators include square root, percent and plus/minus.

To perform a binary operation, enter the first number, the operator, and then the second number. Binary operators include: plus, minus, multiply, and divide.

The memory functions provide the ability to store a number in memory and recall it later.  Other functions provide the ability to modify entries or operations. To delete the current entry, use the clear entry button. To remove the most recently entered numbers digit by digit, use the Backspace button. To clear all the operations except the value in memory, use the clear all button.

The calculator display shows the current value.  It could be the last number that has been entered, or the result of calculation.  The result of calculation is updated instantly upon a unary operation, but not updated for a binary operation until the Equals button or another binary operator is entered.  If there is an error or overflow, the current value will be voiced as “Error”. Use Control plus V anytime for the voicing of the current value in the display. When the display is in focus, you may use Control plus C to copy the current value into a clipboard.

This calculator also has a scientific mode, a statistics mode, and a business mode under the View menu.  Use F5 to access the scientific view and you will get a full-function scientific calculator. You may use F6 to access the statistics view.  You can calculate the count, sum, mean, median, max, min, range, variance and standard deviation of the current data set. You may also use F9 to access the business view. It performs financial functions such as loans, mortgages, leases, savings, and annuities.

To exit the calculator, choose Exit from the File menu.

Note that a number of the settings used, such as the voice and the voice characteristics, are taken from the default settings file of the main program. They cannot be changed in this application.
