What if a student asks me for "an accommodation" that is not listed on the accommodation letter?

Approved Accommodations

Approved accommodations are listed on the Accommodation Letter.

If there is a need for a very specific, tailored accommodation due to a specific concern/educational limitation related to your class, EAC will contact you via email to ensure the EAC, student, and instructor are working from the same understanding of these specialized accommodations.

If a student is reporting an accommodation that is not on the accommodation letter or that you have not been alerted to via email, then it is not an approved accommodation. The student may be asking for an allowance. An allowance is when an instructor provides the student an exception but it is completely within an instructor's discretion.

Example

Student reports that they have an accommodation for "open note tests" but this is not listed on the accommodation letter and you have not received any email regarding use of notes on tests. The student is actually requesting an allowance to use notes on tests, this is your discretion and you may allow if you wish but are not obligated to do so. EAC will never require open note tests but may request the use of a term sheet, blank mindmap, etc. - these are specialized based on the student's documentation, educational limitations, and course specifics.

Student reports having an "approved formula card" on your math test, it is listed on the accommodation letter. You must allow the student to have access to a card with formulas on it (the card must be submitted for your approval). If you have concerns that this constitutes a fundamental alteration, please work with the EAC coordinator to resolve.
