Can I ask a student's disability because I believe this will help me assist them?

Students have a right to confidentiality.

  • Please do not ask a student to reveal information regarding their diagnosis.
  • If a student chooses to disclose their disability to you, that information must be kept confidential.
  • If a student has presented you with an accommodation letter, that information must be kept confidential.
  • If the student has requested a peer note taker, please do not reveal the student needing the note taker when soliciting a volunteer.

Please remember that disabilities can be visible or invisible. You may believe that a student does not need accommodation based on your observation, but please do not make assumptions about a student's accommodation needs. Rest assured that a student's accommodation request, disability documentation and educational limitations has been reviewed by EAC staff prior to approving accommodations.
