Getting Started with Otter

Otter for Education Basics

Activate Your Otter Account & Download the App

If you've requested an account from me, you'll receive an email from Otter.ai. You'll be asked to set up a password and inviteed you to download the app to your smartphone or tablet. Look in your student account: Otter subscriptions are linked to my.smccd.edu email addresses.

Note: When you set up Otter for the first time, it will ask you what you will use it for and what videoconferencing platform you use. Just select "Other" on those screens. It may also ask you to link your calendar to its agenda feature - I find this really annoying, and I suggest that you skip that step.

You can get the app for free from the Apple App Store Links to an external site. and Google Play Links to an external site..

Once you set up your password, you can start using the app or the online interface right away.

Otter's Online Interface

Go to Otter.ai Links to an external site. to record conversations online, or to work with conversations that you've recorded using your mobile device.

Important: Otter.ai works best in the Google Chrome browser, but also runs in Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge. It used to work with the Safari browser, but in summer 2020 Apple pushed out a browser update that broke Safari's compatibility with many tech tools such as Otter.

Sign into Otter.ai using your Skyline student email address and the password that you created. Here's what the interface looks like:

Otter website with groups and folders on the left; and recording and uploading buttons on the right.
