Welcome and Introduction Overview

Description

The San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD) Faculty Handbook for Online and Hybrid Instruction is a supplemental guide to the faculty handbooks provided at each of its colleges, Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College, respectively. It is designed to provide additional information to support online learning on the SMCCCD campuses and to describe in detail the SMCCCD Administrative Procedure for Distance Education. This handbook is organized as online pages in Canvas, so as to furnish information in a navigable format that can easily allow for supplementation and revision as policies and procedures develop and change. The handbook has been developed based on the recommendations of the CSM Distance Education Advisory Committee and Academic Senate.

Online courses and instructors are subject to standards and regulations, and criteria which are in addition to the established standards and practices for on campus, face-to-face (F2F) courses.

Handbook Goals

  1. Define faculty role in course development and course approval, the assignment of online instructors, and oversight of online courses to ensure quality and conformity with institutional practices and procedures.
  2. Provide technical and pedagogical support and resources for faculty teaching online and hybrid courses.
  3. Furnish information about training for online and hybrid course delivery methods.
  4. Inform faculty about the policies and procedures that relate to distance education courses.
  5. Define best practices in distance education and how those should be incorporated into course design and delivery.
  6. Offer comprehensive resources for ongoing faculty professional development.
