Reading the Research: Module 15
"Healthy supercentenarians"
The Student Learning Outcomes for this course include (1) exposure to empirical findings in the field of human development and (2) application of research findings as they relate to every day life. Each module I will provide a current example (most often from a peer-reviewed journal article) of research connected to a topic explored in that module.
Many people expect that the older you get, the sicker you get. However, researchers are finding that this is not true of some centenarians. In fact, a recent study of centenarians from 100 to 119 years of age found that the older the age group (110+, referred to as supercentenarians) the later the onset of diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, as well as functional decline.
