Using Otter.ai for Zoom Sessions

How to Record Active Zoom Sessions

Before you use Otter.ai to record active Zoom sessions, make sure to provide your accommodation letter to your instructor and tell them that you're using Otter.ai. The person running the meeting or class needs to know who the mysterious "[Your Name]'s Otter" is when that name shows up in Zoom.

  1. Make sure that you have the full URL for the Zoom meeting. This URL should include the password, if there is one.
  2. Go to your Zoom meeting or class. (You need to be in an active session for this to work.)
  3. Open Otter.ai in your web browser.
  4. Find the text entry field at the top of the screen, next to the blue Record button. It has a little camera icon, plus the words "Paste meeting URL to record."

  5. Paste in the full URL for the Zoom meeting and press the Enter key.
  6. Wait a few moments, and then your "Otter" will pop up in the Zoom meeting - or if your instructor uses a Zoom waiting room, they will see that your Otter is trying to come in (which is why you need to warn the person who is running the Zoom session).

  7. The Zoom session is now automatically being recorded and transcribed. When the Zoom meeting ends, Otter ends the recording automatically. You will be alerted when the transcribed audio recording is ready for you.
