How to Create a Mind Map and Outline with Mindomo

Here are written instructions; I demonstrate how to do this in a video on the next page.

Creating a Mind Map

  1. Log in to your account on Mindomo.com Links to an external site..
  2. Click the Create button, then select an option. For this module, please choose either of these:
    1. "Blank Mind Map" - this option is great for all students
    2. "Writing an Essay" - this option is best for students who really want to practice writing an essay at the college level. You can find it in the "Literature and Writing" section (listed under "Use Cases" on the left).

If You Select a Blank Mind Map:

  • Click "Central Topic" and type in your main topic.
  • Press the Tab key to add subtopics.
  • Click topics and drag them on top of any other topic to link them.

If You Select "Writing an Essay"

  • Follow the instructions that Mindomo provides. 
  • Fill out as many of the bubbles as you wish.

Turning a Mind Map into an Outline

  1. Click the "Hamburger" icon at the top left.        
  2. Select "View as Outline"
  3. You may continue typing in this Outline view if you wish

Downloading Your Outline

  1. Click the "Hamburger" icon at the top left.       
  2. Select "Export"
  3. Select the "Text File" (.txt) option
  4. Click Export.
  5. Select "My Computer," choose where to save the TXT file, and click Save.

Instructions for Mindomo on a Windows or MacOS Computer

  

Creating a Mind Map

  1. Launch Mindomo on your computer - it will open to a screen that shows all your options.
  2. Select an option. For this module, please choose either of these:
    1. "Blank Mind Map" - this option is great for all students
    2. "Writing an Essay" (in the Education section) - this option is best for students who really want to practice writing an essay at the college level

If You Select a Blank Mind Map:

  • Click "Central Topic" and type in your main topic.
  • Press the Tab key to add subtopics.
  • Click topics and drag them on top of any other topic to link them.

If You Select "Writing an Essay"

  • Follow the instructions that Mindomo provides. 
  • Fill out as many of the bubbles as you wish.

Turning a Mind Map into an Outline

  1. Save the mind map and give it a name. You may press Ctrl-S, or click the Disk icon in the top left.   
  2. Click the "Hamburger" icon at the top left. 
  3. Select "View as Outline"
  4. You may continue typing in this Outline view if you wish

Saving Your Outline as a Word Doc

  1. Click the "Hamburger" icon at the top left.   
  2. Select "Export"
  3. Select the "Microsoft Word Format (.docx)" option
  4. Click Export.
  5. Choose where to save the file, and click Save.
