Dictation in Microsoft Word 365

Tired of Typing? Dictate Your Text

This video shows you how to dictate text in Microsoft Word 365, online - which is available in Office 365. If you have the latest version on your Windows or Mac computer, it will probably look the same. (Like using dictation? Check out the list of voice commands in the "Dive Deeper" section.)

Note: If you're using a version of Microsoft Word that is already on your Windows computer, and you don't see the microphone icon shown in that video, to turn on Dictation just hold down the Windows key and press H.

How to Get Office 365

All students in the San Mateo County Community College District can sign up for free Microsoft Office 365 accounts (which include Word). Here's how:

  1. In your web browser, navigate to SMCCCD's OneLogin page Links to an external site.. (That's where you access WebSmart, your email, and so on.)
  2. Log in with your District credentials.
  3. Look for the Office 365 tile and click it.
Note: You may need to open the "mySMCCD: All Portal Apps" tab to find that tile; after you click it once, it will appear on your main OneLogin screen.
  4. To open Word, just click on the Word button on the left of the page.

Tip

In Office 365 you'll see a link that invites you to download Word and other programs. I don't suggest doing that, since Microsoft will start pestering you to pay for upgrades.
