4.1 | Overview Transcript
The syllabus is more than a guide to the course. It is also a reflection of the instructor. The language that is included in a syllabus sends a message to students about what an instructor values and allows the instructor to set a tone of respect and inclusivity.
The Cañada Course Template contains an accessible syllabus template that is natively built using the Canvas Rich Content Editor, making it simple for instructors to customize the template with their specific course information and personal touches. The Cañada Syllabus Template is developed in an accessible format and includes sample text that instructors can easily populate with pertinent course information.
Whether an instructor selects to adopt the accessible syllabus as a part of the Cañada Course Template or decides to build their syllabus from scratch, an effective syllabus should include the following components:
- A description of the course and any prerequisites,
- instructor contact and preferred methods of communication,
- course modality and general course guidelines,
- goals and learning outcomes,
- required course materials,
- grading policy information,
- links to Cañada College policies and student resources,
- an accessible course schedule and,
- optionally, a course summary, which can be automatically populated by Canvas based on published assignments and course activities
To access the Cañada accessible syllabus template, navigate to the Commons in the Global Navigation Menu. Once you are in the Canvas Commons search for the Cañada Template - Full Course Template and then select the title on the tile. Finally, select Import to pull the course template and accessible syllabus template into your course shell.
Once you have the Cañada Course Template in your course shell, navigate to the syllabus index in the Course Navigation Menu. To edit the various sections of the accessible syllabus template, select Edit and then using the tools in the Rich Content Editor, you can update the text with your own course information. At the top of the accessible syllabus template, you will notice written instructions for using the syllabus index. This language is in bold and italicized text. Additionally, many of the sections in the syllabus template contain sample language and examples that should be reviewed and updated prior to publishing the course for students to view.
Additionally, the optional course summary, which is automatically generated in Canvas based on published assignments and course activities, can be enabled or disabled toward the bottom of the syllabus index screen. Once you've completed making your updates to the accessible syllabus template, select the Update Syllabus button to save your work.
