Overview

In a well-designed course, students will need access to important Getting Started information. There are many components to include such as an instructor welcome, Canvas and campus technical support information, a student online readiness evaluation, online etiquette guidelines, and opportunities for student engagement. This information is often located within a "Module 0," which precedes the beginning of the course learning modules.

The Cañada Getting Started module template includes the following customizable resources, all of which are best practices in an effective, accessible, digital classroom:

  • Student Technical Support (Canvas, Campus, and Zoom information)
  • Course Syllabus & Instructor Contact Template
  • Course Navigation Instructions Template
  • Online Etiquette Guidelines Template
  • Preparing for Success Template
  • Student Support Services Template
  • Course Q&A Forum Template

Faculty may develop their own Getting Started module content, or faculty may adopt the Cañada Template - Getting Started Module which can be imported from the Canvas Commons Links to an external site.. The Cañada Template - Getting Started Module is a standalone resource that is extracted from the full Cañada Course Template discussed in the previous module of this course and is designed for those who only need access to the Getting Started module content.

Using the Cañada Template - Getting Started Module eases the process of adding pertinent information to the course environment. Whether you decide to adopt the Cañada Template or develop your own Getting Started module, you will want to review the contents of the following pages to ensure you have included the essential components of this student success module.
