In this video, you will learn how to use Heading Styles in the Canvas Rich Content Editor. Using Heading Styles is the best way to create consistent, well-formatted, and accessible content in Canvas.

On this demo page we see three sections: an Overview, Part I and Part II.

What we sometimes see users do is highlight this text and make it bigger or bold.

That works well enough for sighted users, however, those using assistive technologies are unable to differentiate between the bigger and bolded text and that of a regular paragraph.

What we want to do instead is highlight that text and using the tools in the Rich Content Editor use the Heading Styles to format.

It's worth noting that in Canvas, all titles begin at the Heading 1 level. Headings should occur in a sequential order and not skip heading levels.

When we reach the text editor, we see that the first Heading option is a Heading  2.

Logically, we would want to make the next section, either another Heading 2 or Heading 3.

If we were to skip a Heading level and designate this as a Heading 4 and then run the Canvas Accessibility Checker, it would indeed flag that Heading levels should not be skipped.

Here we have the option to fix the Heading hierarchy or we can return to the Rich Content Editor to fix the Heading structure.

Thank you very much for watching.
