Moderating Quizzes
Once you have published a quiz, the quiz sidebar shows the Moderate Quiz link, which allows you to moderate the quiz for each student in your course. On the Moderate Quiz page you can view the progress of student submissions and view the number of quiz attempts each has taken. You can also grant students extra attempts, grant extra time for timed quizzes, and manually unlock quiz attempts.
Quizzes can be “moderated” so instructors can give select students extra attempts or extra time on a quiz. Additionally, instructors can allow selected student(s) to take a quiz outside of the window of opportunity the instructor set for the quiz or to view the quiz results one more time. It is not required that instructors create additional quizzes accommodate students. Other students will not know which students are being accommodated in the course.
Steps to Moderate a Quiz
With Canvas this is very easy to accommodate a student who needs extra time on test. Display the quiz page. On the right sidebar click Moderate this Quiz.
The Moderate Quiz screen will appear. Review the options below.
- Students who have previously attempted a quiz will display with their names hyperlinked and in the columns you can view data about their previous attempts. Click the student's name to view the attempt.
- To select multiple students check the box next to each student’s name. All students can be selected by clicking the very top box.
- When multiple students are selected click Change Extensions for (#) Selected Students. If only selecting one student click the pencil icon next to the student’s name.
The Student Extensions dialog box will appear. Review the options below. Please note if you do not see all the settings in the dialog box, review the quiz settings. For example, if a time limit is not set for a quiz, the second option will not appear in this dialog box.
- In the box next to Extra Attempts input a value of the number attempts the selected student(s) will have with the quiz.
- In the box next to Extra Time on Every Attempt input the number of extra minutes the selected student(s) will have when completing a quiz.
- If the quiz setting, Only Once After Each Attempt, is checked on quiz settings page, the option, Let the student see the results one more time, will display in the Student Extensions dialog box. Check the box if the selected student(s) can have another view of the quiz results. See next page for further details.
- Check the box next to Manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt to allow the selected student(s) to take a quiz outside of the From and Until dates set for the quiz. If the students has already used up the number of attempts allow, the instructor may need to allow the student(s) another attempt. Review number 1.
- Click Save when done.
