Unit 2: Creating Pages in Canvas
Creating Pages in Canvas
If you want to build content and education resources WITHIN your course (rather than importing external content), then PAGES is the way to go. Pages are where you can include text, video, and links to your files. You can even make links to other pages.
Think of pages as wikis with a more usable interface. Canvas keeps the entire history of the page so you can see how it changes over time. By default, only teachers can edit pages. But you can always override these settings by allowing students and other participants enrolled in your class to edit specific pages.
For instance, all the information you are reading right now has been designed using the Pages tool. In fact, there are many uses for pages, such as:
- Using pages as a way to deliver content (similar to the pages in this course)
- Using pages as the course landing page (i.e. Front Page)
- Using pages for course navigation (in conjunction with or in place of the course navigation menu)
- Using pages to organize unit materials or lesson overview
- Using pages for 'answer keys' (then hiding the pages from student view)
- Using pages for a wiki, allowing students to contribute content to a page

Adding Images to Pages
You can use the content selector to insert graphics and images into your course content. The Content Selector is located on any page where you can edit content, such as the Assignments or Syllabus pages. When you upload an image using the Content Selector, Canvas automatically inserts the image into the content area (Rich Content editor) of the open page.
Note: if you just want to upload an image for future use, you should use the Add Files link on the Files Page instead of the Content Selector.
To insert images into your Canvas pages
- In Canvas, open a page that contains the Content Selector.
- In the Rich Content editor, put your cursor where you want to insert the image.
- On the Content Selector, click the Images
- Click Upload a new image.
- In the Folder box, select the folder in which to store the image. If you have not created any folders, Canvas adds the image to the Course Files folder, which is the default folder.
- Click Choose File.
- On your computer or storage media, select the image file.
- Click Upload.

Adding Video to Pages
Overview
You can add instructional video to Canvas in a number of ways:
- Link/embed videos you find hosted outside of Canvas - most popular as explained below
- Record a video directly into Canvas (Links to an external site.) 🐼 short videos typically less than 2 minutes
- Upload video files into course Files - not recommended!
- Link to videos you record outside of Canvas - typically Google Drive or Canvas - see Overview of adding your own recorded videos to Canvas
YouTube
For search tips refer to Master YouTube Video Search with Simple Commands and Advance Search (Filters).
Three ways to add YouTube videos:
Embed other videos you find (e.g. Vimeo, TedTalk)
In addition to YouTube there are other free streaming video services such as Vimeo and TedTalk that include large repositories of videos. As long as these videos include an iFrame tag in the embed code, you can embed them into your Canvas course pages using the new Insert Media tool.
